Asensio Torrado, José

A Coruña, 1892 – New York, 1961. Exiled general.

Republican general, named Sub-secretary of War by Largo Caballero. He was later sent to the United States as a military attaché at the Spanish embassy in Washington. He occupied positions in the Sociedades Hispanas Confederadas and the newspaper España Libre. Emilio González López says that he had “little sympathy” for the autonomies and for Castelao. For example, he argued with Víctor Fernández (from the Frente Popular Antifascista Gallego) in an event on April 14, for ‘scheduling the interpretation of the Galician anthem before the Republican, without accepting the explanations that the Republican anthem was closing the event because it was the most important one’ (Sources: Emilio González López, Castelao, propagandista da República en Norteamérica (2000), Portal Galegos).
